Horticulture, landscape design & floriculture
If you love plants, JCCC can prepare you for a career in horticulture, landscaping or floral design.
JCCC offers a horticulture associate of applied science degree. The 64-to-68-credit-hour program prepares you with the knowledge and job skills for employment in the greening industry in entry-level or higher positions. A required 320-hour internship provides hands-on experience in the industry. Graduates find employment in landscape design and maintenance, nursery and greenhouse production, greenhouse operations and management, plant propagation facilities, turf management and many other related occupations.
In addition, JCCC has a 2+2 articulation agreement with Kansas State University whereby you can take the your first two years of horticulture curriculum at JCCC and transfer to K-State to complete a four-year horticulture degree.
JCCC's 31-credit-hour horticulture certificate also prepares you for a career in the "greening industry." Those who complete the program are ready for entry-level or higher positions in garden center and nursery management, greenhouse management, greenhouse technician, landscape design, lawn care and many other related occupations.
The 31-credit-hour landscape technician certificate prepares you for a science-based career as a landscape technician. Those who complete this certificate will be prepared for entry-level or higher positions in landscape design, maintenance and management; lawn care; landscape construction; turf management; and many other related occupations.
JCCC also offers entrepreneurship certificates that provide you with basic skills in horticulture, landscape or floral design as well as knowledge of small business development and management.
- The 30-credit-hour horticulture entrepreneurship certificate prepares you to open your own business in landscape design and maintenance, lawn care, garden centers and nurseries, and wholesale greenhouse growing.
- The 32-credit landscape technician entrepreneurship certificate prepares you to open your own business in the landscape design and maintenance industry.
- The 31-credit-hour floral design entrepreneurship certificate prepares you to realize your entrepreneurial dream of opening your own business in the floral design industry.
Classes are offered in the Horticulture Science Center, which houses three state-of-the-art greenhouses with computerized climate controls, a plant micro-propagation room with a laminar airflow system to purify air, a head house with 6-foot tall floral refrigerators and a classroom outfitted with large work tables centered under retractable outlets.
