Student leader Sandra Ozuna
Armed with a welcoming smile and an eagerness to help, Ozuna answers student questions, plans special events for students and betters the JCCC experience for everyone with whom she connects. It's her mission to share with others in ways that builds their confidence, just as she's experienced while at JCCC.
When Ozuna returned to the Kansas City area from the East Coast a few years ago, it didn't take her long to find that JCCC met her college expectations.
"When I lived in New York, I went to a community college in Queens," Ozuna said. "Once I moved here I looked at several colleges in the area, but Johnson County Community College fulfilled all my expectations. The qualified and professional faculty and staff, the quality in the service as well as the quality of people made me want to enroll immediately and I have no regrets."
JCCC's engagement with students of all ages, not only in the academic setting but also in matters related to the community, is something that stands out for Ozuna, a JCCC student in the marketing and management program.
"The college is aware of the needs of the students," she said. "JCCC provides many student resources, such as the Writing Center, Math Resource Center, Center for Student Involvement and Career Services," she said.
In addition, Student Activities, where Ozuna works, organizes events, concerts, movies and other activities for students to make the JCCC experience both educational and fun.
"There is always something to do at JCCC no matter what you like," Ozuna said. "You will find something interesting here."
For Ozuna, she's involved in several organizations, including the Latinos United Now and Always (LUNA) Club as well as the International Club.
"I have found in those clubs incredibly friendly people as well as a source of support and an atmosphere to express and share my customs and culture," she said. "It is amazing how the college focuses on the value diversity, giving all students from different backgrounds the opportunity to fit in and have the sense of belonging. I am from Colombia and through the LUNA Club, I have had the opportunity to speak my language and share common interests with Latinos from other countries."
Ozuna encourages prospective JCCC students to begin the enrollment process as soon as possible.
