Legal Nurse Consulting Entrance Requirements

Prior to admission to the Legal Nurse Consultant certificate program, an applicant must possess a registered nurse degree, which includes 18 credit hours of general education courses. Some examples of general education courses are social science, English, foreign language, mathematics and humanities. Applicants who have earned an Associate of Science degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing fulfill this general education requirement.

Applicants must also fulfill two other entrance requirements: possess a current state nursing license and have completed 2,500 hours of clinical work as a registered nurse.

Legal Nurse Consultant Program Goals

The educational objective of the Johnson County Community College Legal Nurse Consultant program is to provide registered nurses with sufficient legal knowledge to assist with cases involving medical issues. The program is designed to prepare students to function as consulting and/or testifying experts. Upon successful completion of the Johnson County Community College Legal Nurse Consultant program, the student will be able to:

1. Identify important aspects of the legal nurse consultant career, including utilization of legal nurse consultants, education, and national, state and local organizations.

2. Recognize and avoid potential problems in the legal profession, including the unauthorized practice of law and other ethical matters that arise in the course of a legal nurse consultant’s duty.

3. Perform legal assistant assignments requiring use of analytical abilities.

4. Explain structures and functions of the federal and state court system.

5. Explain the substantive areas of law, including civil and criminal law.

6. Explain legal procedures in civil law suits and criminal procedures.

7. Locate, analyze and evaluate all legal and factual materials necessary for any legal matters.

8. Demonstrate computer competency.
