Checkhov’s ‘Seagull’ Flies at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The  Johnson County Community College academic theatre department will present Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

One of the first productions of the famed Moscow Art Theatre, this classic play offers a story of theatrical lives: Madame Arkadina, a famous actress; her son, Treplev, whose unfulfilled literary ambitions haunt him; Nina, a young actress and the object of Treplev’s attention; and the charming and successful author, Trigorin. The action concerns the interweaving of the characters’ lives and the romance, hopes and disappointments as they spend languid summer days at a country estate.

“The reason that I want to do Chekhov is because it's such terrific acting work,” said director Beate Pettigrew, JCCC adjunct professor and president and artistic director of Barn Players Theatre.  “Since college theater is so much about the process rather than the product, Chekhov's plays offer a perfect playground.”

The subject is suitable for teens and adults. For more information about The Seagull, contact Pettigrew at 913-469-8500, ext. 3245.
