JCCC Holds Nell Mitchell Wellness Fair
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Nell Mitchell Wellness Fair, which promotes health and wellness activities for the community, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the Gymnasium Fieldhouse at Johnson County Community College. The event is free and open to the public. The fair features wellness activities, information booths and screenings. People are encouraged to dress casually so they can participate in activities.
Wellness activities include blood pressure screenings, chair massages, postural analysis, skin-fold-caliper body fat measurement, body mass index (BMI) calculation, breast cancer risk assessment, foot scan to check for fallen arches, lung volume screening, stress management analysis, drawing for wellness products and more.
Information will be available on blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stress management, cancers, substance abuse, nutrition, osteoporosis, spine health and injury prevention, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep disorders, stress, stroke, weight management and food-portion control.
Booth participants include the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Fulk Chiropractic, Johnson County Regional Prevention Center, Johnson County Mental Health Center, JCCC Nursing Department, JCCC Respiratory Care, JCCC Lifetime Fitness Center, Lifestyle Strategies for Health and Weight Management-Well*Life Department at Carondelet Health, Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s Sleep Disorder Center, Diabetes Center and Nutrition Clinic, Spinal Care Center, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and InTouch Therapeutic Massage.
Physical activities and 20-minute talks on health and wellness issues will be available during the fair. Participants can sign up at the fair to win the wellness basket (need not be present to win).
The wellness fair has been an annual event made possible through the Nell Mitchell estate since March 1999. Mitchell, an Overland Park resident and physical education instructor at Paseo High School, left $1 million from her estate to the JCCC Foundation to be used for physical education scholarships and Nell Mitchell speakers and fair for continuing education.
