JCCC receives second KBOR grant for nursing education

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College has received a second grant from the Kansas Board of Regents to support the college’s nursing program. For the second year, the nursing program received a grant of $144,200, which will continue to fund part-time instructors hired last year. A supplemental grant of $32,000 will also be used for nursing faculty.

“The college is grateful to the Board of Regents for its continued generosity,” said Terry A. Calaway, JCCC president. “This gift will help us meet the community’s future health care needs.”

On July 25, the Board of Regents announced that 17 Kansas public institutions of higher education with programs for registered nurses would receive an additional $600,000 in grants to support nursing faculty and supplies. This is part of a 10-year education initiative that addresses the critical nursing shortage in Kansas.

Last year, the college received $470,445 from the Kansas Board of Regents to support the college’s nursing program. Of that total, $144,200 was used to hire five part-time nursing faculty members, and $326,245 was used for patient simulators and related equipment needed to expand the patient simulation laboratory on campus.

“The nursing program is honored that the Kansas Board of Regents, the JCCC board of trustees and the college’s administration once again have supported our efforts to address the nursing shortage,” said Jeanne Walsh, JCCC assistant dean, nursing.
