OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Five experts from a spectrum of healthcare services will present Healthcare Advice for This and Future Generations from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College. The seminar, part of the Polsky Practical Personal Enrichment Series, is free, but seating is limited. Reserve tickets by calling the JCCC box office, 913-469-4445. Reserved parking is available. Refreshments and networking are offered one-half hour before and after the program.

Because a large audience is anticipated, the venue has been changed from the 400-seat  Polsky Theatre, usual site of Polsky seminars, to the 1,250-seat Yardley Hall. Time of the seminar has been extended to allow sufficient time for speakers to cover this topic.

The speakers for the evening are:
Loren Berenbom, M.D., cardiologist, University of Kansas Medical Center
Rich Hastings, president and CEO, St. Luke’s Health System
Matt Lewis, president, Village Shalom, retirement community
Elaine McIntosh, president, Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care
David Wilson, volunteer state president, AARP Kansas, and assistant director, Public Programs and Conferences, Continuing Education, University of Kansas

Topics will be:
Focusing on wellness (not illness) – the best solution to the problems (and benefits) of living longer
Crisis – what’s facing doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, Medicare and AARP in light of reimbursements for examinations, cost of treatments and limited grant money for research
Prescription costs in the U.S. – is opening them for bid by Medicare, AARP and veterans an option?
Paying nothing, paying some, paying more – healthcare’s three categories in the U.S.
Socialized medicine? – a look at healthcare services in Canada vs. the United States
Isolated and alone – find out why living at home is expensive, strains the family and, most serious, stops our aging population from socializing
Financial independence past the age of 100 – get your formal education, then start investing small amounts monthly in a Roth IRA, at least 13 percent annualized rate of return (10 percent over 3 percent inflation)
End of life issues – how to make loved ones (or yourself) comfortable at the end of life

This series of educational presentations is underwritten by the Norman & Elaine Polsky Family Supporting Foundation within the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in partnership with Johnson County Community College. The series includes a number of topics which are not now being offered in a formal academic program. Each event is free and open to senior citizens, students and the general public.
