JCCC Initiates First Family-Owned Business Event

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Center for Entrepreneurship at Johnson County Community College will present its first JCCC Family Business Forum featuring a seminar by Drew Mendoza, managing principal, The Family Business Consulting Group, from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the Regnier Center followed by a networking reception from 5-6 p.m.
Tailored to family business owners, the seminar is free, but registration is
required. Space is limited to 100. Call 913-469-3878 to register. This event initiates an on-going forum for family business owners that will be facilitated by the JCCC Center for Entrepreneurship.
Mendoza, a nationally known family business adviser and founding director of the Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center, will address steps to assure prosperity for the family and business, regardless of size.
Some of the areas to be addressed include:
• Three key actions taken by the country's most successful family firms
• Precautions when bringing children into the business
• Preparations for leadership succession
• Pros and cons to transferring business ownership to multiple family members
• Best practices for husband-and-wife teams in business together
• Deciding when a functioning board of directors makes sense and who should be on the board
• Agreements and policies every family business needs
• Managing the expectations of non-family employees and executives
Founders of family businesses, adult children, spouses and non-family executives are encouraged to attend this event.
JCCC Center for Entrepreneurship currently offers a series of workshops for family business owners that focuses on family business policies, estate and succession planning and strategic planning. As an outgrowth to this forum and the workshops, the center is establishing an ongoing forum for family business owners to address specific family business issues identified by forum participants. Those attending the Jan. 29 event will receive further information.
