JCCC Debate Team Wins Awards at Nationals

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.- The Johnson County Community College debate team won a bronze award for team debate plus two sweepstakes awards at the 2007 national tournament of Phi Rho Pi, the national speech and debate society for two-year colleges, April 8-15 in Houston.

The team of Jessica Peters, Olathe, and Ben Harkins, Overland Park, advanced to the semifinal round where they earned a bronze award. Both of these debaters have been with JCCC for two years and will leave in May, transferring to four-year institutions where they will continue to debate.

In addition, the JCCC debate team won two "sweepstakes" awards, based on points accumulated during the tournament. JCCC won the silver award in the Hindman division for debate sweepstakes and the bronze award in the Hindman division for overall sweepstakes.

Terri Easley is the JCCC speech and debate coach. For more information about the debate team, contact Easley at 913-469-8500, ext. 4587, or teasley3@jccc.edu.
