JCCC’s nursing program has recently been highlighted because of its efforts to address the nursing shortage. In May, the JCCC Foundation received a lead gift of $750,000 from the Educate, Enrich and Enable Fund of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to be used to fund a state-of-the-art patient simulation lab for the college’s nursing program and an endowment of $500,000 to provide scholarships for nursing students in honor of two sisters, Margaret F. and Maron J. Lorimer, Olathe.
In July, JCCC received $470,445 from the Kansas Board of Regents to support the college’s nursing program as part of the Regents 10-year nursing education initiative to increase nursing capacity in Kansas by 25 percent.
JCCC’s nursing program increased its admission to the first year of the program from 55 to 64 students in fall 2006. There continues to be approximately 200 qualified candidates a year who apply to the program.
