JCCC Campus Ledger Wins Grant

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –  The Campus Ledger, the student newspaper of Johnson County Community College, has been awarded a $1,000 grant to promote the First Amendment on campus and within the community.

The grant is named to honor Louis E. Ingelhart, a retired journalism professor at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., who dedicated much of his life to studying, writing and teaching the First Amendment. The grant is administered by College Media Advisers, a national organization whose membership includes advisers in print, broadcast and new media.

Miguel Morales, news editor, pushed to pursue the grant after his 13-month investigation into allegations of unlawful harassment by the college president.

"Our need to educate the campus community and our board of trustees on the First Amendment has never been so clear. This is our goal," he said.

The funds will be used for programming activities in spring 2007.  Possible events include a Freedom of Information Act tutorial cosponsored by the Kansas City Press Club and a panel discussion with professional journalists in the area.
