Up and Coming Jazz Series at Carlsen Center

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Carlsen Center ArtsEducation program in collaboration with Bobby Watson and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music Jazz Studies will put young jazz players in the spotlight with the Up and Coming Jazz Artists Program. The four-day after-school clinic will be held with Kansas City’s great jazz musicians providing instruction from 3:15-6:15 p.m., Monday-Thursday, Nov. 13-16, at Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College.

Participating jazz professionals are Bobby Watson, Michael Pagan, James Albright, Gerald Spaits, Tommy Ruskin, Rod Fleeman, Dan Thomas, Paul McKee, Stephanie Cox, Joe Parisi and Stan Kessler.  More than 60 students are registered for the clinic.

Students will receive instruction on development of improvisation skills, which represents one of the highest forms of jazz creativity; attend master classes led by experts in the field to investigate the challenges and idiomatic characteristics of each instrument; and work with specific clinicians in developing ensemble skills.

The press is invited to attend Nov. 14 and 16. On Nov. 14, students will attend master classes categorized by instrument at 3:30 p.m. and rehearsals by ensemble at 5 p.m. in various performance halls and classrooms at the Carlsen Center.  The professional and student musicians will perform together at 5 p.m. Nov. 16  in Yardley Hall.

This is the third year for the Up and Coming Jazz Artists Program, originally part of a grant written by Angel Mercier, ArtsEducation Director, Carlsen Center, for at-risk students. For more information, contact Mercier at 913-469-8500, ext. 4221.
