Japanese Garden Workshop Offered by Leading Professionals

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College is hosting a Japanese garden workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in room 211 of the Carlsen Center. A first-class pairing of professionals, Takeo Uesugi, a Japanese-American landscape architect who has designed acclaimed Japanese garden installations and professor emeritus at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and Tokushirou Tamane, master gardener for the Kinkakuji Temple, Golden Pavilion, Kyoto, Japan, will lead the seminar that focuses on application of Japanese garden principles to Central U.S. regions.

The seminar will cover the culture and history of Japanese gardens; landscape conditions of the Central regions; construction techniques – rock arrangement, waterfalls, wood and bamboo structures, bridge, fences, pergola and plantings; and maintenance – pine tree, evergreen and deciduous tree pruning, plant care and garden accessories.

Participants should have a minimum knowledge of landscape design and an introductory understanding of Japanese culture. The fee is $85 for one day and $135 for both days. Up to 30 people can participate. For registration and topics for each day, call 913-469-3835, or visit online at www.jccc.edu/japanesegarden. There is a one-hour lunch break each day (a variety of food is available at JCCC’s Food Court for low to moderate prices).
