JCCC finds new location in northeast Johnson County

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.—Even though Mission Center Mall will close its doors this winter, Johnson County Community College will continue to offer classes in the northeast part of the county. Beginning in January 2006, the college will offer classes at Bishop Miege North, 4901 Reinhardt, Fairway (subject to approval of the board of trustees at their meeting Dec. 15).

Measuring about 10,000 square feet, the new location will have six classrooms, including a computer lab and a study area, plus an area for students to meet with faculty and counselors and a computer for student use in the reception area. JCCC’s classrooms are located on the second story of the building, accessible from an entrance on the south end of the structure. A full schedule of day, evening and Saturday classes will be offered.

The new facility will be leased from the Bishop Miege Foundation for two years, with an option to renew the lease for a third year.

JCCC has conducted classes on the second floor of Mission Center Mall since fall 2002. However, because the mall has now been sold and the new owners plan to demolish it to make way for new development in the spring, the college needed to find a new site for classes. The college intends to return to Mission Center Mall when its redevelopment is complete.

“The college is committed to offering classes in the northeast part of the county,” said Charles J. Carlsen, JCCC president. “As a community college, it’s important to be accessible to all parts of the community. This new location will enable our students to take classes this spring close to home.”
