JCCC Trustees Approve New Location at Bishop Miege North

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – At a special meeting Dec. 20, the Johnson County Community College board of trustees approved the college’s recommendation to open a new location at Bishop Miege North, 4901 Reinhardt, Fairway.

The vote to approve the new location at Bishop Miege North was 5-1, with trustee Lynn Mitchelson voting against the recommendation. Mitchelson would prefer to see the college in a more visible location in the northeastern part of the county.

At their regular meeting Dec. 15, the board had asked college staff to spend a few days investigating whether space at the former Sprint headquarters on Shawnee Mission Parkway might be available. However, adequate space there is not available for the college’s use.

JCCC has conducted classes on the second floor of Mission Center Mall since fall 2002. However, because the mall has now been sold and the new owners plan to demolish it to make way for new development in the spring, the college needed to find a new site for classes.

Measuring about 10,000 square feet, the new location will have six classrooms, including a computer lab and a study area, plus an area for students to meet with faculty and counselors and a computer for student use in the reception area. JCCC’s classrooms are located on the second story of the building, accessible from an entrance on the south end of the structure. A full schedule of day, evening and Saturday classes will be offered.

The new facility will be leased from the Bishop Miege Foundation for two years, with an option to renew the lease for a third year.
