JCCC Names New Center for Business and Technology Director

Tim Gelvin, Director of the New Center for Business and Technology OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Tim Gelvin was named the new director of the  Center for Business and Technology at Johnson County Community College, effective Dec. 16.

Gelvin has 28 years of business experience, specializing in the utility, energy and technology sectors; training and development; consulting; end-use retail and business-to-business retail management; and U.S. and international product development. He comes to JCCC most recently from Gelvin & Associates, Kansas City, Kan., a consulting firm that provides market development, business strategy and market planning for the energy, technology and utility sector.

Gelvin began his professional career at Florida Power, where he served for 18 years in demand-side management, load management, regulatory recovery, marketing, field operations, customer service, economic development, product development and overall corporate strategy development.

Gelvin was then recruited to Utilicorp United, Kansas City, Kan., a multinational energy, electric and gas company, where he was a vice president in charge of international marketing and strategy development, branding and market communications.

From June 2000-December 2003, Gelvin was asked to head the international Strategic Business Unit for Itron International, Spokane, Wash., where he supervised a multinational staff of 110. Gelvin achieved record profitability in the first year and was recognized on the cover of Metering International, a premier trade journal, for leading the “reinvention of Itron's international groups.”

Gelvin earned his bachelor of science degree in business from Florida State University, Tallahassee, and his master of business administration degree from the University of Tampa. He has completed executive training and development from the Darden Business School, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville; the Graduate Business School, Stanford University, Calif., and, in May 2002, the Strategic Leadership Program, Oxford University’s Templeton Graduate School of Business, England.

“Tim brings broad business experience and leadership abilities that focus on communication, creativity and team building,” said Sally Winship, JCCC’s Vice President of Continuing Education and Community Services. “His creative energy and strength in building partnerships will maximize the growth potential of the Center for Business and Technology as we continue to provide exceptional quality professional development and workforce training opportunities to the community.”

As director of the Center for Business and Technology, Gelvin is responsible for the general management of the Center including sales, budgeting, marketing, management, administration and promotion.

“It’s a privilege to join the Center for Business and Technology with its strong history and, along with other team members, help it achieve even greater success,” Gelvin said. “I appreciate the opportunity to be part of an educational institution, which affords the most effective way to improve the quality of life of individuals, a community and the nation.”
