JCCC Men’s Soccer Improves to 11-1

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer continued its winning ways, improving to 11-1-0 on the season with three victories last week.

The Cavaliers opened the week with a 2-1 home victory over Coffeyville on Wednesday, Sept. 21.  It didn’t take long for JCCC to take the lead. Cole Copeland converted on a pass from Austin Dowling just two minutes into the match, scoring on a header inside the penalty area . With just three minutes remaining in the half, Pharok Hussein hooked up with Jonathan Baldwin to give JCCC a 2-0 lead.  Coffeyville cut the deficit to one with a goal mid-way through the second half, but JCCC’s defense buckled down, and allowed just one more shot on goal the rest of the game.  Freshman Dylan Ford was in net and earned the victory.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, JCCC traveled to Dodge City, and came away with a 2-0 shutout win.  While the score was relatively close, the Cavaliers were in complete control of the match, outshooting the Conquistadors 17-to-4.    Sophomore Lucas Rodriguez got JCCC on the board with 14:52 left in the first half, firing a shot from 18 yards out after an accurate through pass from Derek Perez.  JCCC netted its final goal in the second half on a free kick by Jason Jacob.  Freshman goalie Mark Lenahan was credited with the shutout.

JCCC returned home for a noon game on Sunday against St. Louis/Florissant Valley, and showed no ill effects from their cross-state travel the night before, downing the Norsemen 4-0.  All four goals came in the first half of action.

Doug Stelle started the scoring at the 9:04 mark with a header off a corner kick from Jacob, one of his two assists in the match.   Ten minutes later Matt Iverson gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage firing a shot past the goalie from 18 yards out.  Rodriguez provided the assist.  Shortly after, Rodriguez was on the scoring end of a pass from Iverson, upping JCCC’s lead to 3-0.   Copeland capped the offense’s output with a one-time goal off a pass from Jacob with 2:31 remaining in the half.  Lenahan again earned the shutout, stopping all three shots on goal.
