Mike White Quartet Plays Jazz Recital

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Mike White Quartet is next up in the free Jazz Series at noon Tuesday, Oct. 4 in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College.

White, saxophone, is joined by Paul Smith, piano, Bow Bowman, bass, and Mike Warren, drums.

White began playing tenor saxophone in local clubs when he was 17. He played at the Blue Room in the Street Hotel, 18th and Paseo, and around the corner at the Mardi Gras Club, where he heard Miles Davis and Horace Silver and sat in with Wes Montgomery. White played with the last of the big bands including Bob Crosby, Ralph Martieri, Buddy Morrow, Cab Calloway and others. He has done several albums, including two with Jay McShann and one with Kevin Mahogany.

The Jazz Series continues at noon Tuesday in the Recital Hall with:

  • Oct. 18    Vince Bilardo Trio featuring Charles Perkins
  • Oct. 25    Ed Pharr Trio
  • Nov. 1    Alaadeen and group 21

Jazz Series concerts are cosponsored by the JCCC humanities and music departments, Community Services and the Music Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 34-627.
