Don Lipovac Plays the Accordion at Ruel Joyce Recital

Don Lipovac OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Don Lipovac, a U.S. champion accordion player, performs at noon Monday, Oct. 24, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the free Ruel Joyce Recital Series featuring Kansas City classical musicians.

Of Slovenian heritage, Lipovac started his musical career at age 4 playing Slovenian melodies on a button-box accordion. He began piano accordion lessons and was trained in the classics. In 1958, he won first place in the American Accordion Association National Championship contest and represented the United States at the world competition in Brussels. He attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and has degrees in music theory and music education. He appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show and as soloist with the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been the director of the St. John Tamburitzans for more than 40 years. He has the unique distinction of being inducted into the Tamburitza Association of American Hall of Fame and the Polka Hall of Fame.
