Jan Faidley Plays Sax in Classical Concert

Jan Faidley OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –  Jan Faidley, saxophone, accompanied by Jan Kraybill on piano, performs at noon Monday, Oct. 10, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the free Ruel Joyce Recital Series featuring Kansas City classical musicians.

Faidley received a master of music degree in saxophone performance from Indiana University and has won prizes in saxophone, chamber music and music history and literature from the Conservatoire National de Region in Bordeaux, France.

Faidley is a founding member and saxophonist with newEar Contemporary Music Ensemble. She has performed with numerous ensembles and orchestras including the Solistes d'Aquitaine, the Ensemble International de Saxophones, the Quatuor de Saxophones de Talence, the Orchestre de Bordeaux Aquitaine and the San Diego and Kansas City symphonies.

Her past teaching experience includes professorships at private and municipal music schools in France. Faidley maintains an active private studio and serves as adjunct instructor of saxophone at Mid-America Nazarene University. 

Kraybill is the principal organist and director of music at Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) World Headquarters, Independence, Mo. She has a doctor of musical arts degree (organ performance) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and has concertized as a pianist and organist throughout the United States and abroad. She played as part of Bach Aria Soloists at the Oct. 3 Ruel Joyce recital.

The Ruel Joyce series continues at noon Monday in the Recital Hall with:

  • Oct. 17    Roger Oyster, trombone
  • Oct. 24    Don Lipovac, accordion
  • Oct. 31    Margaret Marco, oboe; Ellen Bottorff, piano
  • Nov. 7    Cindy Egger, guitar

The series is named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians federation from 1977 until his death in 1989. The concerts are cosponsored by the JCCC humanities and music departments, Community Services and the Music Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 34-627.
