JCCC Announces Distinguished Service Faculty

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Ten Johnson County Community College
faculty have been selected to receive Distinguished Service Awards, bestowed in recognition and reward of teaching excellence.

  • Mary Grace Foret, Mission, associate professor, English
  • Johanna Foster, Lawrence, associate professor, science 
  • Nancy Harrington, Stilwell, professor, information systems
  • Shirly Kleiner, Olathe, professor and career program facilitator, accounting
  • Mark Raduziner, Mission, professor, journalism and media communications
  • Larry Reynolds, Shawnee, professor, speech
  • Karen Schory, Kansas City, Mo., professor and program facilitator, interactive media
  • David Seibel, Lenexa, professor of life sciences
  • Steven J. Wilson, Raytown, Mo., professor of mathematics
  • Myra Young, Olathe, professor, speech

Recipients are awarded $5,000 over a two-year period. Fred Rodriguez, associate dean for Teacher Education, Undergraduate Programs and Partnerships, University of Kansas School of Education, served as the external judge.


Distinguished Service Award Winners at JCCC

  • Mary Grace Foret, Mission, associate professor, English
    As one of three creators and facilitators for the English for Academic Purposes program, Foret has received the National Exemplary Initiatives Award from the National Council of Instructional Administrators and the Dedication to Teaching ESL in the Community College Award sponsored by TESOL, the major international organization for educators of second-language English students. She was instrumental in creating EAP classes in Writing and Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary and Speaking and Pronunciation that help non-native speakers communicate with faculty, take notes, understand assignments, read textbooks, write papers and engage in group studies with fellow students.
  • Johanna Foster, Lawrence, associate professor, science
    Foster teaches courses in environmental science, natural history of Kansas, ecology, cell biology and horticulture. She developed both the Ecology and Cell Biology courses, which require students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations through fieldwork and classroom/laboratory activities. She has played an integral part in the Collaborative Science Initiative to improve the scientific understanding of elementary school teachers. She has published research on prairie restoration issues and is currently president-elect of the Kansas Academy of Science.
  • Nancy Harrington, Stilwell, professor, information systems
    Harrington’s students say she is effective, organized, caring, helpful and technically superior. She challenges her students to excel and is always there to help and encourage. As a colleague, Harrington provides information and actively contributes her energy and talents to the campus community. As a former chair of the Educational Affairs Committee, she was instrumental in streamlining the curriculum development process. As a member of the Faculty Association, she is building consensus between the faculty and the administration.
  • Shirly Kleiner, Olathe, professor and career program facilitator, accounting 
    As a certified management accountant, Kleiner mentors students considering careers in accounting. She is a pioneer both locally and nationally in accounting education, having developed and taught Accounting I, Accounting II and Managerial Accounting over the Web. She serves as a member of the JCCC Distance Learning Coordinating Council, Innovative Technology Committee, Faculty Advisory Council and Faculty Development Advisory Committee.
  • Mark Raduziner, Mission, professor, journalism and media communications
    Raduziner has developed and administers the largest journalism and media internship program in the Kansas City metropolitan area. He co-sponsors the annual Cavalier Film Festival and works with part-time faculty in the areas of curriculum development and learning strategies. He has been involved in numerous college committees, including the publications board.
  • Larry Reynolds, Shawnee, professor, speech
    Reynolds teaches courses in public speaking, interpersonal communication and intercultural communication. He also serves the college on various departmental, divisional and campus-wide committees, including the steering committee for JCCC’s application for the Kansas Award for Excellence and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He is a past president of the JCCC Faculty Association and an adviser to the International Club. His teaching projects include the creation and development of a computerized speech grading program for his public speaking classes. His primary research interests are in the areas of public address, political rhetoric and rhetorical criticism.
  • Karen Schory, Kansas City, Mo., professor and program facilitator, interactive media
    Schory spearheaded the implementation of the interactive media A.A.S. degree program and two new one-year certificates in Web design and multimedia design. She serves on the Faculty Association and the Scholars in Residence Committee, through which she brought two story artists from Pixar Animation to JCCC, and has participated in a professional exchange with faculty from the Netherlands. She is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Experience Design Community and Friends of Art, and last year had a one-person show at the Kansas City Artists Coalition.
  • David Seibel, Lenexa, professor of life sciences
    Seibel currently teaches human anatomy and general zoology and serves on numerous faculty and staff search committees as well as planning committees for instructional technology and adjunct faculty liaison for the science department and the science, health care and math division. He co-authored a study guide, now in its fourth edition, to accompany Prentice Hall’s Human Anatomy text, and he recently wrote more than 1,500 online review questions for McGraw-Hill’s new anatomy text. In addition, he has authored and maintained the original  companion Web site for Prentice Hall’s Human Anatomy, edited and updated the associated instructor’s manual and test item file, and served as a content editor for recent editions of the text.
  • Steven Wilson, Raytown, Mo., professor of mathematics
    Wilson’s most recent innovations and collaborations have included an online business math question database, interactive Web pages illustrating mathematics concepts, implementation of dual-credit opportunities for high school students enrolled in college algebra, the creation of a math and physics course for the game development program, and an electronic math collaboration for electronic sharing of ideas and materials among instructors. He was a recent winner of the Excellence and Innovation Award from the International Conference of Technology in Collegiate Mathematics and of the Innovation of the Year Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College.
  • Myra Young, Olathe, professor, speech
    Young teaches interpersonal communication and public speaking, including online public speaking classes. In addition to serving on peer review committees, she is a member of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award project team, the General Educational Learning Outcomes Committee, the Bookstore Advisory Committee, the Faculty Development Advisory Board and the Information Services Steering Committee and is a facilitator for the Adjunct Certification Training program. She has been actively involved in 4MAT training and the formation process at JCCC.
