JCCC Professor Wins Chefs Association Award

John Courtney OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – John Courtney,  professor, hospitality management, Johnson County Community College, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Culinary Federation Greater Kansas City Chefs Association at its annual banquet Sept. 25 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

Courtney, Olathe, who received his bachelor and master of science degrees from Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, Miss., received awards in the industry for high performance in controlling income and increasing profit and customer count. He was also an opening-team supervisor for hotels. He designed training manuals for restaurant and hotels, implemented training courses for new employees and hired new employees.

Courtney joined the faculty at JCCC in 1984, bringing with him 10 years of restaurant and hotel management experience. When he first worked at JCCC, he spent 12 years at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth. He was the only professor teaching inmates in a 30-hour program in hospitality management.

He is now the career program facilitator for the JCCC Food and Beverage, Hotel and Culinary Apprenticeship programs.  The Lifetime Achievement Award was given in recognition of Courtney’s support and hard work  given to chef apprentice students over the years, according to Jerold Marcellus, board chair, ACF Greater Kansas City Chefs Association.
