Bryan Hicks and Friends Play Jazz at JCCC

Bryan Hicks OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Bryan Hicks and Friends get together for a friendly jazz gig at noon Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the free Jazz Series featuring Kansas City musicians. For this performance, Hicks, bass and vocals, teams up with Paul Smith, piano, and Rod Fleeman, guitar.

A Kansas City, Kansas, native, Hicks studied cello for a year at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., before returning to Kansas City to play in the Inner City Orchestra based at the Mutual Musicians Foundation and funded by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act. His music took him to Paris for a year performing with French musicians and American expatriates. Over the years he has played with many outstanding Kansas City performers and groups including Ida McBeth, Jazz Mania, Rich Hill, Tommy Ruskin, Claude “Fiddler” Williams, Frank Smith, Karrin Allyson and David Basse. Bryan has recorded CDs with other musicians and just released his own CD, Just Got Back in Town.

The fall Jazz Series continues at noon Tuesday in the Recital Hall with:

  • Oct. 18    Vince Bilardo Trio featuring Charles Perkins
  • Oct. 25    Ed Pharr Trio
