OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The JCCC Model United Nations team won an Outstanding Delegation award for its portrayal of Kenya at the 2005 American Model U.N. Conference, Chicago, Nov. 19-22. Sixteen JCCC students competed against other universities and colleges from across North and South America. The team’s success was led by Brandon Bezner, Overland Park, who represented Kenya in the General Assembly.

In addition to Bezner the JCCC team included Calvin Baumgarten, Overland Park; Jessica Bergman, Louisburg; Emily Boullear, Leawood; Katie Brantingham,  Louisburg; Kevin Broome, Lawrence; Cortney Fowler, Olathe; Ben Freeman, Leawood; Paige Houghton, Lenexa; Mick Larson, Overland Park; Ryan Ngelale, Lenexa; Andres Noory, Lenexa; Robert Peckham (team captain), Lenexa; Desiree Schumacher, Lawrence; Christine Traner, Lawrence; and Rachel Young, Leawood.  Brian Wright, Warrensburg, Mo., associate professor, political science, is the JCCC Model U.N. team adviser.

The Model United Nations allows students to understand the international issues at the United Nations and, at the same time, build skills in public speaking and diplomacy. More than 1,500 students participated in this conference, proposing resolutions dealing with world issues. The issues discussed range from peace-keeping and human rights to economic development and the plight of children. The conference is helping students to further understand global issues and international relations. This forum allows students to discuss global concerns in an environment that is similar to that of the United Nations.

The JCCC Model U.N. team is planning to attend the Midwest Model United Nations Feb. 22-25, 2006, in St. Louis, where they will represent France and the National Model U.N. Conference April 10-16, 2006, in New York, where they will represent Mali.
