OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Beyond Bounds • Glow, the art auction benefiting the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College, offers a unique challenge for artists and one-of-a-kind purchase opportunities for art patrons at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
In honor of JCCC’s 40th (ruby) anniversary, 119 prominent artists have created works using a ruby medium— pastel, colored pencil, ceramic underglaze, oil paint, watercolor, textile dye, liquid acrylic or any combination of the above.
Completed, signed works will be sold at live and silent auctions the evening of the event. Returning as guest auctioneer is Bill Shapiro, Kansas City lawyer, art collector and host of KCUR’s Cyprus Avenue.
Participating artists include Jim Brinsfield, Lynn Davis, Tomory Dodge, Lisa Grossman, Robert and Shana Parkeharrison, Eric Sall, Lisa Sanditz, Dana Schutz, William Tinker, Leo Villareal and more than 100 more well known international, national and regional artists.

The evening also includes a gourmet buffet of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and desserts and musical entertainment. Collectors Gloria and Dick Anderson, Lake Quivira, and Candy and Fred Merrill, Overland Park, are the honorary chairs of Beyond Bounds • Glow. Sponsors include JE Dunn Construction, Barton P. and Mary D. Cohen Charitable Trust, Rees Masilionis Turley Architects, Project Explore and media sponsors SPACES Magazine and 435 South Magazine.
“Many well known Kansas City collectors such as Marti and Tony Oppenheimer, Jerry and Margaret Nerman, Larry and Cindy Meeker, and Lee Goodman eagerly anticipate each Beyond Bounds. And all have added significant works to their collections from these spectacular events,” said Bruce Hartman, executive director, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.
Hartman also stresses that one of the goals of Beyond Bounds is to encourage new collectors of contemporary art.
“This event allows new collectors an opportunity to view and acquire works by leading contemporary artists (created in many media and styles) and often, at very affordable prices,” Hartman said. “The objects we have received are incredibly beautiful.”
In the seven previous Beyond Bounds, prominent international, national and regional artists have transformed silk scarves, boxes, frames, Japanese skikishi, vinyl LPs, sterling silver and 24 K gold leaf. Hundreds of artists, collectors and patrons have attended each event. Since 1992, Beyond Bounds has raised nearly $500,000 to support the former JCCC Gallery and now the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.
“Because of the excitement generated by the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and the impressive Oppenheimer Collection, there has been an overwhelming response by artists to this year’s Beyond Bounds,” said Bruce Hartman. “The success of Beyond Bounds can be directly attributed to the extraordinary generosity and creativity of these artists.”
Beyond Bounds is a biennial auction. This is the first Beyond Bounds to be held in the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by award-winning architect Ky Sung Woo and opened in October 2007.
Glow will be an evening of elegance and fun with the museum aglow in ruby red.
Tickets are $40, available by calling 913-469-3835 or online at www.nermanmuseum.org.
