Youth Have Opportunities for Sports, Learning and Jazz at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College will offer sports, learning opportunities and a jazz camp for youth (jazz camp for adults too) this summer.

  • JCCC Adventurers, Crazy About Learning, TALENTS, Mad Science and Summer Academy Programs are youth enrichment learning programs for kindergarten-9th grade from June  2-July 31 with options of all-day or half-day classes. Classes include science, vet medicine, space, nature, history, computers, Chinese, reading, writing, math and art. For more information, call 913-469-3836. Registration begins March  3.   • Summer sports clinics for youth ages 8-18 will be held June 2 -Aug. 1 with options of all-day, half-day or one-day clinics. Clinics include baseball, boys and girls basketball, dance/cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, softball, girls volleyball, all sports conditioning, tennis, track and field, weight training, pole vaulting and competitive-edge clinics for advanced training. Pre-clinic, after-clinic activities and supervised lunches are available for all summer sports clinic participants.   • Summer jazz camp for middle school students through adults will be June 17-June 20. The camp will be led by well-known Kansas City musicians – Doug Talley, saxophone; Stan Kessler, trumpet and flugel horn; Gerald Spaits, bass; Doug Auwarter, drums; and Wayne Hawkins, keyboards. Sessions will include theory, improvisations, combos, listening techniques, master classes and and scat singing. Lunch will be provided every day. Cost is $135 per person.
