Shooting Star Exhibit Opens at Nerman Museum

Shooting Star Exhibit photo OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Thirty-seven finalists in the visual arts category of the Shooting Star Recognition and Scholarship Program are on display March 9-April 13 in the McCaffree Gallery of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Johnson County Community College.

The Shooting Stars Program honors high school seniors nominated by high school faculty in the Blue Valley,DeSoto, Gardner-Edgerton, Olathe, Shawnee Mission and Spring Hill school districts as well as Barstow, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, the Pembroke High School and Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in nine categories.

Since 1996, the Shooting Stars Program has honored more than 630 high school seniors, awarding $160,000 in scholarships. Now in its 12th year, the program has continued to grow through the generosity of several key contributors, including Columbian Bank, Carl and Lee McCaffree and other members of the Arts Ambassadors, as well as the work of the staff and volunteers of the Arts Council of Johnson County.

The visual arts finalists will be exhibited annually in the McCaffree Gallery. Bruce Hartman, director, and Kent Smith, museum coordinator, both of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, selected one work from each of the finalists for exhibition.

The complete list of categories are photography, three-dimensional art, two-dimensional art, theater/performance, theater/technical, voice, winds and percussion, strings and literature.

The Nerman Museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and all JCCC holidays.
