Powwow Planned for May 3 at JCCC
 
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. ­ – The Second Annual American Indian Health Research and Education Alliance Powwow will be held from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, May 3, between the Billington Library and Courtyard Fountain, Johnson County Community College (inside the GYM if raining). The powwow is free and open to the public.

The event is a health and wellness powwow. Its focus is on improving the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of American Indians, although many of the illnesses American Indians face effect non-Natives as well. Free health screenings will be provided for cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, vision, lung health and more.

Additionally, the powwow will draw attention to contemporary Indian culture, highlighting dance, music, food and arts. 

The planned schedule of events is:

Health screenings and health education exhibitors10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Arts, crafts and food vendors11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Gourd dancingnoon-1 p.m.
Grand entry1:30 p.m.
Competition dance2-6 p.m
Dinner break6-7 p.m.
Hand drum competition7-8 p.m.
Competition/intertribal dances8-10 p.m.
