JCCC Holds 24th Annual Parkinson's Symposium
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 24th Annual Parkinson's Symposium for healthcare
workers, Parkinson's patients and their caregivers will address the treatment and management of Parkinson's disease and its symptoms from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 12, in Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College.
The featured speakers are:
- Katherine Widnell, M.D., Ph.D., a graduate of Yale University, is widely published and has participated in numerous clinical trials in Parkinson's disease. She is currently the director of the Wichita Parkinson's Center.
- J. David Garnett, M.D., associate professor, otolaryngology, University of Kansas Medical Center, specializes in the treatment of neurological voice disorders and has performed more than 400 transnasal esophagoscopies in the evaluation and management of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
- Jules Nazzaro, M.D., associate professor of neurosurgery and director of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, KUMC, has extensive experience in deep brain stimulation. He was previously an attending physician and chief of stereotactic and functional neurology at Boston University Medical Center for 12 years.
Discussions will include:
- Techniques to improve speech and swallowing ability
- Movement techniques and exercises to improve balance, flexibility and ambulation
- The use of humor to reduce stress, increase creativity and memory
- Three new therapies available for Parkinson's disease
This year's Parkinson's symposium is sponsored by Health and Human Services
in the JCCC Center for Business and Technology. The program is approved for three contact hours for RNs, LPNs, LMHTs, social workers, registered dietitians, counselors, PTs, OTs and ACHAs. Cost of the session is $36, $12 for network members. To register, call 913-469-2323.
