JCCC Student Newspaper Wins National Certificates

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Campus Ledger, the student newspaper of Johnson County Community College, was awarded 10 certificates in a national journalism contest.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association bestowed two first places, two second places, one third place and five certificates of merit to students working in the visual presentation of The Campus Ledger.

The contest is open to all colleges and universities in the United States. No separate category exists for two-year colleges, so the students were competing with students from both two-year and four-year schools.

Winners were:

  • First place –  Whitney Shaffer, Prairie Village, black-and-white feature page design; Matt Walsh, Kansas City, Kan., information graphics
  • Second place – Kat Kramer, Olathe, full-page photo layout and also single-subject presentation for tabloid page
  • Third place – Kramer, full-page photo layout
  • Certificates of merit – Jeff Carlson, Shawnee, information graphics; Kramer, page-one design and also news page design; Shaffer, information graphics; Juniper Tangpuz, Kansas City, Mo., illustration portfolio
