Kansas Court of Appeals will be at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas Court of Appeals will be in session from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Craig Community  Auditorium, the second floor of the General Education Building, Johnson County Community College.

The three-judge panel consists of Presiding Judge Christel E. Marquardt, Judge Nancy Caplinger and Judge Steve Leben. The judges will hear oral arguments in six cases, three in the morning and three in the afternoon. Each opposing side is given 15 minutes to present reasons why the judges should rule in his/her party’s favor. The hearings allow students in JCCC's paralegal/legal nurse consultant program, other college students and members of the community to see the Kansas court system in action.

Kansas Court of Appeals judges decide an appealed case by reading the record of the trial and written briefs filed by the parties and hearing oral arguments. They research and review the law involved in the case and then write an opinion.

The Court of Appeals hears all appeals from the district courts in both civil and criminal cases except those which may be appealed directly to the Supreme Court.
