Free Spring Concerts Scheduled at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College will have five free concerts during the spring semester – one by adult and children’s community choruses, three by academic music groups and one sponsored by the JCCC Brown & Gold Club. All events are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

  • The JCCC Midnight Express Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ron Stinson, JCCC professor of instrumental music, will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center. The ensemble will be performing works by Cole Porter, Johnny Richards, Bill Holman, Jeff Bunnell and JCCC music faculty member Clint Ashlock.
  • The Johnson County Community Chorus, the Choraliers ( a select chorus group) and the Young Singers of Overland Park will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center.

The Johnson County Chorus, directed by Anita Cyrier, will perform Zugeunerleben (Gypsy Life) by Schumann featuring a solo quartet, And the Father Will Dance, Prairie Waters by Night and Between Two Hills, Song for the Mira featuring soloists from the chorus, The Cloths of Heaven and Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair.

The Young Singers of Overland Park, directed by Jan Jensen, will perform Danny Boy, May Day Carol, Simple Gifts, May the Road Rise to Meet You, Dodili (Israeli folk song) and Sahayta (an international greeting).

The Choraliers, directed by Dallas Hainline, will sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Embraceable You, Feeling Good, Dust in the Wind and Chili Con Carnie.

The mass choirs will sing Ride On, Ain'a that Good News and Gospel America.

  • The JCCC Concert Band, directed by Stinson, performs a concert titled Encore and Fantasies at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in Polsky Theatre. The two major works are Three Extraordinary Journeys by Philip Sparke, written as a tribute to Jules Verne, with three movements – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Five Weeks in a Balloon and Around the World in 80 Days – and El Quijote by Ferrer Ferran, a work for concert band and narrator based on the  work of Spanish literature Don Quixote, Cervantes.
  • The JCCC Chamber Choir and MadRegalia, directed by Terri Teal, JCCC associate professor of vocal music, sing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in Polsky Theatre. The concert will have a variety of music ­from classical to spiritual. Composers include Josquin, Pfautsch and JCCC faculty member Geoff Wilcken. The concert has pieces about the moon and stars, including a jazz arrangement of How High the Moon. Also featured is a lively setting of the e. e. cummings poem, I thank you God.
  • JCCC's Brown & Gold Club, for Johnson County residents age 55 and older, presents The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday, May 23, in Yardley Hall. Refreshments begin at 7 p.m. in the Carlsen Center lobby. This 17-piece swing band will play favorites from the 1940s-1960s. All ages are welcome to attend.
