JCCC Culinary Team Wins Top Medals in Singapore

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College culinary team members realized their dreams of being world-class champions by earning a gold, two bronze and two silver medals in the Food & Hotel Asia Culinary Challenge held
April 22-25 in Singpore.

The biennial FHA is Asia’s largest food and hospitality event. The JCCC team was one of only two U.S. contestants; the other was a chef from Detroit. JCCC won five medals under the  “Live Practical Hot Cooking” category.
 
Competing against other students, Katee McLean, Olathe, and Joe Jackson, Overland Park, won the gold medal in the “Two to Tango” class. In the same class,  Nguyet Nguyen, Shawnee, and Kevin Nicholls, Overland Park, won a bronze, and Katie Palmer, Overland Park, and Ed Cockman, Pleasant Hill, Mo., won a bronze.
 
Competing against professional chefs, Johnathon Stockdale, Roeland Park, won a silver medal in individual “Field and Forest” class, and Thomas Haggerty, Overland Park, won a silver in “Neptune’s Catch” class.

There were about 780 competitors from Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico, Austria, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, China, United Arab Emirates-Dubai and Macao.
   
The majority of judges were World Association of Cooks Society-approved judges from the United States, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, France and Japan.
   
Felix Sturmer, Lenexa, assistant professor, hospitality, is the JCCC team coach. Lindy Robinson, Overland Park, assistant dean, Design and Hospitality, is the team manager.
