Carlsen Center Announces 2008-2009 Season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Charles Rogers, artistic director of the Carlsen Center for the Performing Arts, Johnson County Community College, has announced the Center’s 2008-2009 season –  a season of first appearances, star power and diverse cultures.

Both the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the Czech Symphony Orchestra make their first U.S. tours with stops at the Carlsen Center. Tap dancer Savion Glover, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, American Idol winner Ruben Studdard and the always-popular humorist Garrison Keillor add celebrity status. Diversity comes with Marsalis Brasilianos’ Brazilian flair, the Latino choreography of Luna Negra Dance Theater, the National Acrobats of China, and India’s classical and folk drumming from Grammy-award winner, Zakir Hussain. The Capitol Steps, on the other hand, are made-in-the-USA, and their political satire is a perfect choice for an election year.

The Carlsen Center offers a variety of world-class performing artists including classical artists, Broadway musicals, comedy, bluegrass, dance, symphony orchestras, family fun and headliners. When Rogers received the Sixth Annual North American Performing Arts Managers and Agents Award for Excellence in Presenting the Performing Arts this year in New York, he was referred to as “one of the best presenters in North America.” True to the label, another quality season unfolds.

The season is listed chronologically and then by series. Shows begin at
8 p.m. in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center unless otherwise noted.
