OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Nathanael May, pianist, will perform at noon Monday, Oct. 26, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the Ruel Joyce Recital Series featuring local classical artists. The recitals are free and open to the public.

May is a pianist with a penchant for new music, performing more than two dozen works by established and emerging composers featuring the piano in solo and various chamber settings. He has concertized abroad and in the United States including the University of California at Berkeley, Center for New Music and Audio Technologies, Mansfield University's Keyed up for Winter series in Pennsylvania, Bisbee Arizona's For the Love of Music program and an appearance with DJ Spooky in his Terra Nova Antarctica suite at the Lied Center of Kansas.

May is the founder and artistic director of the soundSCAPE composition and
performance exchange, a festival for new music in Pavia, Italy. He holds degrees from the University of Kansas (doctor of musical arts) and the Eastman School of Music, and became an assistant professor of piano and pedagogy at Missouri Western State University in August 2009.

The Ruel Joyce Recital Series continues at noon Mondays in the Recital Hall, except as noted:

Nov. 2 Mark Gibbs, cello, Yardley Hall
Nov. 9 Jeff Harshbarger, bass, and guests, Yardley Hall

The series, named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians’ federation from 1977 until his death in 1989, is cosponsored by the JCCC music departments, Community Services and the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Seating is available first-come, first-served.
