JCCC Sponsors Safety Awareness Event

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A safety awareness training will be conducted by Greg and Missy Smith at noon Wednesday, March 12, in Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College. The event is free and open to the public.

The Smiths are the parents of Kelsey Smith, an Overland Park teenager who was abducted and murdered in June 2007. Greg Smith, a former officer with JCCC’s department of public safety, is now a teacher at Shawnee Mission North High School.

The presentation will begin with 10 minutes of pictures and video of Kelsey and her life and continue with a discussion of proactive ways to avoid unsafe situations. (This is not a self-defense class.) A question-and-answer period will follow.

Merchandise will be sold to benefit the Kelsey Smith Foundation, a not-for-profit charity created to proactively protect youth and young adults.

The safety awareness training is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.
