Classical Trio Performs Ruel Joyce Recital

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Ellen Campbell, horn, JoDee Davis, trombone, and Patricia Higdon, piano, will perform at noon Monday, March 3, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the free Ruel Joyce Recital Series featuring Kansas City classical artists.

Campbell, assistant professor, horn,  University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, has recorded with the Oregon Brass Quintet, New Mexico Brass Quintet, tubist Michael Grose and pianist Victor Steinhardt. With the NMBQ, she toured Finland, the former Soviet Union, Australia and Mexico as well as the United States. As a soloist, Campbell has appeared with orchestras in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, North Dakota and Indiana. Orchestral experience includes principal horn in the Santa Fe Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony and Austin Chamber Orchestra, and performances with the Houston Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, and orchestras of Lansing, Eugene, Flint, Detroit Opera and Austin. In the summer, Campbell is a member of the horn faculty at the internationally renowned Interlochen Arts Camp, Michigan.

Davis, assistant professor, trombone, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, is second trombone of the Santa Fe Opera and currently plays extra with the Kansas City Symphony and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Formerly principal trombone of the Spokane Symphony, she has also performed with a number of other orchestras including the Akron, Canton and Youngstown Symphony Orchestras in Ohio, and the Spoleto Festival Orchestra. Davis was a member of the highly acclaimed trombone quartet PRISMA, which performed throughout the United States and abroad. She has released a solo compact disc on the Albany Records label entitled In the Moment. Davis has a doctor of musical arts degree in brass literature and performance from Indiana University.

Higdon, coach/accompanist, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, performs in numerous chamber music recitals with Conservatory faculty and students and with acclaimed musicians from around the world. She has performed recently in concerts with the highly praised Kansas City Chorale and can be heard on their CD, Fern Hill. In 1995 the Conservatory trustees honored her with the Excellence in Teaching Award. 

The Ruel Joyce series continues at noon Monday in the Recital Hall with:

  • March 17    Selah String Quartet
  • March 24    Lyric Arts Trio
  • March 31    Tim Timmons, saxophone; Patricia Higdon, piano

The series is named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians federation from 1977 until his death in 1989. The concerts are cosponsored by the JCCC humanities and music departments, Community Services and the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.
