Husband and Wife Duo Perform March 10
College Information and Publications 2/11/08 Lyra Pringle Pherigo is a flutist and singer. She is principal flute with the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and Kansas City Ballet Orchestra. She also plays with newEar, Kansas City’s professional contemporary music ensemble, and a musical trio called Serenade. She plays occasionally with the Kansas City Symphony and Starlight Theater. Lyra has a bachelor of music degree in flute performance from Arizona State University and master of music degree in flute performance from Northwestern University, Chicago. She enjoys teaching and has a private studio in her home. As a singer, Lyra has performed with Unity Temple on the Plaza, the Kansas City Chorale and Kansas City Civic Opera. Robert Pherigo is a multitalented musician – a solo pianist, composer, tenor, accompanist and conductor. As a solo pianist, he performed Liszt in Paris and is excited to be learning Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur L’Enfant-Jesus in time for Messiaen’s centenary in 2008. Robert’s compositions have been performed by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Kansas City Symphony and by many choral groups including the Kansas City Chorale, The Lawrence Children’s Choir and Unity Temple on the Plaza’s Chancel Choir. His composition, Sing We Now Noel, written for the Lawrence Children’s Choir, was published in June 2007 by Santa Barbara Music Publishing. As a tenor, Robert has sung with the Chicago Chamber Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and with the Lyric Opera Express, the outreach program of the Lyric Opera. For 10 years, he was a member of the Kansas City Chorale, during which time he sang the tenor solos in Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Robert is on all five of the Chorale’s CDs and James MacMillan’s CDs. He has conducted for the Kansas City Civic Opera and newEar, for which he is also pianist. The Ruel Joyce series continues at noon Monday in the Recital Hall with: The series is named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians federation from 1977 until his death in 1989. The concerts are cosponsored by the JCCC humanities and music departments, Community Services and the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.
