Open Forum on Selection of Judges Held at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – An open forum regarding the selection of judges in Johnson County is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in Craig Community Auditorium on the second floor of the General Education Building.

On Nov. 4, Johnson County voters will decide whether to retain the current merit system or change to an election process for Johnson County judges. Currently, Johnson County has a nominating commission that sends three names to the governor, who then makes an appointment. The name of each judge appears on the ballot of a general election every four years for voters to vote ‘“yes”’ or “no” on retention.

Greg Musil, founder and chair of Johnson Countians for Justice, will speak in favor of merit appointment. John Altevogt, representative for Kansas Judicial Review,  will speak in favor of electing judges. Each will each give a 15-minute prepared statement, followed by questions/answers from the audience, and then each with give closing statements of three minutes.  Anita Tebbe JCCC professor and career program facilitator, paralegal/legal nurse consultant program, will be the moderator.

For more information, call Tebbe at 913-469-3184 or atebbe@jccc.edu.
