Kansas State Brass Quintet Plays Ruel Joyce Recital

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas State Brass Quintet, a Kansas State University faculty brass quintet, will perform at noon Monday, Feb. 4, in Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as the first of the 2008 spring Ruel Joyce Recital Series, free classical music concerts featuring local artists.

The quintet is composed of Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, horn; Paul Hunt, trombone; Steven Maxwell, tuba; Paul Mueller, trumpet; and Craig B.Parker, trumpet.

Fassler-Kerstetter teaches horn, music theory and brass techniques at KSU and is also chair of the wind and percussion division. Before coming to KSU in 1999, Fassler-Kerstetter, who has a doctorate of musical arts, taught at Western Kentucky University. She has played with several professional symphonies and with the American Wind Symphony on its 1987 U.S. tour and 1990 European tour.

Hunt, professor of trombone and undergraduate lead adviser for the department of music, served as head of the KSU Music Department 1998-2006 and, previously, on the faculties of Bowling Green State University and Ithaca College. He received his doctorate in musical arts in trombone performance as well as the performer’s certificate from Eastman School of Music. He made his New York solo debut with the New Music Virtuosi of Bowling Green in the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall in 1989 and has performed many solo recitals since.

Maxwell is instructor of tuba and euphonium. In addition, he teaches courses in brass techniques, music fundamentals and introduction to music; assists with the KSU Marching Band; and directs the KSU Tuba Euphonium Ensemble. He is an active clinician, adjudicator and soloist and has given solo recitals throughout the country. He has held the position of principal tuba of the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, New York, and Central Iowa Symphony and has been a member of the Puccini Festival Orchestra and Fountain City Brass Band in Kansas City, Mo.

Maxwell has a doctorate in musical arts performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Mueller has a bachelor’s degree in music from Grand Valley State University where he studied with Richard Stoelzel. He is pursuing a master of music degree at KSU and teaches trumpet. He joined the KSU faculty brass quintet in 2007.

Since 1982, Parker has been on the KSU faculty teaching music history.

He earned his Ph.D. in historical musicology at the University of California-Los Angeles. He has also done post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. Parker has been a member of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Spoleto (Italy) Festival Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Composers Brass Quintet and many other symphonic and chamber groups.

He is co-founder, director and solo cornetist with the Society for American Music Brass Band.

The series is named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians federation from 1977 until his death in 1989. The concerts are cosponsored by the JCCC humanities and music departments, Community Services and Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.
