OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Los Angeles artist Mark Bradford will be the inaugural speaker for the Jerome Nerman Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, in the M.R. and Evelyn Hudson Auditorium of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Johnson County Community College. A reception with the artist precedes the lecture at 6 p.m. Both the lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Born in 1961 in Los Angeles where he still lives and works, Bradford received bachelor’s and master’s of fine arts degrees from the California Institute of the Arts. Bradford is known for transforming materials scavenged from the street into wall-sized collages and installations. His collages, videos, photographs and installations evoke images of the culture and commerce of downtown Los Angeles.

Bradford’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He has participated in the XXVII São Paulo Bienal (2006); the Whitney Biennial (2006); and inSite: Art Practices in the Public Domain, San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico (2005); and ARCO 2003, Madrid Spain, among many others.

He has been included in major solo and two-person exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2007), with his exhibit Neither New Nor Correct; the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, N.C. (2006-07); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2006);  Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York; REDCAT, Los Angeles (2004); and Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2001).

Recently featured in the PBS series Art:21, Bradford has received many awards, including the Bucksbaum Award and USA Fellowship Award (2006); Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2003); Nancy Graves Foundation Grant and Joan Mitchell Foundation Award (2002).

The Jerome Nerman Lecture Series will be an annual event underwritten by a generous endowment gift to the Nerman Museum from Central Bank of Kansas City. Central Bank and the Tutera Family, owners of the bank, intend the series as a tribute to Nerman, chair of Central Bank, and benefactor along with his wife, Margaret, of the Nerman Museum.

“For more than 20 years, Jerry has given generously of his time and talent to Central Bank of Kansas City. The bank itself and the family ownership group, the Tuteras, owe a large debt of gratitude for Jerry's service through all these years,” said William M. Dana Jr., president and CEO, Central Bank. “Long after all of us are gone, the Jerome Nerman Lecture Series will live on. That is something that Jerry appreciates, and we feel is a lasting contribution to his great legacy.”

“We endowed this lecture series as a way to honor Jerry Nerman,” said Lucille Tutera. “Jerry is the greatest friend and greatest man I have ever known.”

Bruce Hartman, director, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, said the lecture series will not only honor Nerman but also encourage appreciation for and scholarship in contemporary art.

“The Jerome Nerman Lecture Series is a major addition to the museum’s public offerings,” Hartman said. “We are deeply grateful to Central Bank and the Tutera family for their generous support of the museum and college. The gift ensures that this endowed lecture series will become a much anticipated event in our community.”
