‘Agnes of God’ Appears at JCCC

Agnes of God
Left to right: Amanda Smith (Mother Superior) and Maura Pegg (Dr. Livingstone), Overland Park, and Taylor Grisamore (Sister Agnes), Olathe

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College academic theater department will present Agnes of God at 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 27-March 1, and at 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, March 1-2,  in the Black Box Theatre of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College.

Agnes of God tells the story of a young, innocent nun, Agnes, who is found unconscious and bleeding in her room at the convent.  Also found in the wastebasket in her room is a dead newborn which had been asphyxiated.  Sister Agnes remembers nothing of the events and says if there was a baby, it was sent from God.

Conflict arises between a psychiatrist, Dr. Livingstone, who is to determine whether the young nun is fit to stand trial, and the Mother Superior.

Many believe the play is based on a true incident, which occurred at a convent in upstate New York. The play, by John Pielmeier, was first produced more than 25 years ago, and a film version of it was made in 1985.

“It’s a script that provides complicated, challenging roles for three actresses, which is always our goal as we select plays for students to tackle,” said director Sheilah Philip, theater professor.  “Additionally, the play grapples with the eternal conflict between faith and science, but I believe the playwright offers a balanced picture of both the flaws and the joys of belief in either.”

The cast is Amanda Smith (Mother Superior) and Maura Pegg (Dr. Livingstone), Overland Park, and Taylor Grisamore (Sister Agnes), Olathe.

Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. No tickets or reservations are required. For more information, call 913-469-8500, ext. 3245.
