JCCC hosts ‘Lessons from Hiroshima’

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Johnson County Community College will host a live, interactive videoconference discussing the creation of a nuclear-free world from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, in the Hudson Auditorium of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. The event is free and open to the public.

Participants can join the debate: Can we make the world safe from terrorists who could unleash a nuclear bomb? Does the world need nuclear weapons for deterrence, or is deterrence dead? How does Kansas City help build nuclear weapons?

Yoshiko Kajimoto, an A-bomb survivor in Hiroshima, and Steve Leeper, chair of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, will present their views and answer questions via live video. Kansas Citians, including board members of PeaceWorks KC, will pose means for verifying the dismantling of nuclear weapons throughout the world and ending the nuclear threat.

In addition, 30 posters concerning the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings will be on display in JCCC’s Billington Library in late June and early July.

Sponsor for the event is PeaceWorks KC with support from the JCCC International Education Office. For more information, contact PeaceWorks KC board members Henry and Jane Stoever, 913-375-0045, or Ann Suellentrop, 913-342-0587.
