JCCC Volleyball Wins Region Championship
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The No. 2 ranked Johnson County Community College volleyball team captured the 2005 Region VI Volleyball Championship Saturday afternoon, downing Highland 3-games-to-0 in the final. The victory improved JCCC to 29-4.
The Cavaliers began the tournament with a 3-1 win over Allen County. JCCC opened with a 30-17 win, but Allen County evened the games at 1-1 with a 31-29 victory. After that win, it was all JCCC as they followed with wins of 30-9 and 30-19. In the final match, JCCC recorded wins of 30-25, 30-21 and 30-16.
Several individuals had key performances to lead JCCC to the championship. Sophomore Ashley Simmons hit .353, recorded 14 total blocks and averaged 3.1 kills per game. Sophomore Emily Escher averaged 3. 6 kills per game, and passed extremely well according to coach Jill Stinson. Sophomore Lauren Kracl averaged 3.3 kills and had 45 digs, an average of 6.4 per game. Sophomore Christine Watson averaged 10.8 assists and sophomore Katie Jaschke registered 11 blocks. Sophomore Kristen Busboom and freshman Katie Latenser were dangerous serving the ball. Busboom finished with six aces, and Latenser had five.
JCCC will host the District Championship Saturday, Nov. 5. The Cavaliers will face Longview College who won the Missouri region championship.
