JCCC qualifies for nationals third straight year

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College volleyball team, ranked No. 2 in NJCAA Division II, has earned a spot in the 2007 NJCAA D-II National Volleyball Tournament by winning the Region VI/District N title Saturday, at Highland, Kan.  It marks the third straight year JCCC has won the title and advanced to the national tournament.  Last year JCCC finished ninth, and in 2005 won a national championship.  It is the eighth trip to nationals in team history, and fourth under head coach Jill Stinson.  The national tournament will be held Nov. 15-17, at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Cavaliers captured the region crown by downing Highland 3-games-to-0 in the final.  JCCC posted back-to-back 30-19 wins and finished the sweep with a 30-24 victory.  The victory improved JCCC to 25-4.

The Cavaliers began the tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Kansas City Kansas.  JCCC opened with a 30-26 win, and followed with 31-29 and 30-18 victories.  

The 2007 Region VI/District N teams were announced at the championship.  Six members of the JCCC team were recognized, five earning first-team honors.

Sophomore middle/outside hitter Jackie Swab, freshman middle/right side hitter Sydney Pemberton, sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Wright, sophomore libero Lauren Russell and sophomore setter Beth Schneweis were first-team selections.Sophomore outside hitter Jacqui Belozer earned second-team accolades.
