OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College volleyball team has been picked as the No. 2 in the NJCAA preseason volleyball. It is the program’s highest ranking to start a season, topping the No. 3 ranking the team had to start last year after winning the 2005 NJCAA D-II National Championships. The Cavaliers finished ninth in the national tournament last year.
This season, nine ranked teams appear on JCCC’s schedule, including Iowa Western, the defending Division I national champion, and Kishwaukee College, the defending Division II national champion. Both are preseason No. 1 picks. JCCC will face Iowa Western Oct. 6 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and face Kishwaukee early in the campaign on Sept. 8, in Cedar Rapids,Iowa, in the Kirkwood Tournament.
Also ranked in Division II are No. 4 Iowa Lakes (Sept. 7), No. 5 Neosho County (Sept. 26), No. 10 Des Moines Area (Sept. 8), No. 12 Cowley College (Aug. 25 and Oct. 10), No. 22 North Platte (Sept. 22), No. 24 Coffeyville (Oct. 3) and No. 25 Longview (Aug. 24).
JCCC returns six players from last year’s squad, including 2006 all-conference and all-region hitter Jackie Swab (Olathe East). Other key returnees are outside hitter Jacqui Belozer (Blue Valley Northwest) defensive specialist Lauren Russell (McPherson, Kan.), and setter Beth Schneweis (Bishop Ward). Also back are outside hitter Ann LeBlanc (Shawnee Mission West) and middle/outside hitter Emily Schukman (Great Bend, Kan.).
JCCC’s newcomers consist of setter Rachel Bogard (Tonganoxie, Kan.), right-side hitter/setter Katie Flaherty (Grand Island, Neb.), middle/outside hitter Ivy Morrison (Topeka, Kan.), defensive specialist/libero Bobbi Pearce (Wellsville, Kan.), middle/outside hitter Sydney Pemberton (Prairie Village, Kan.) and setter/defensive specialist Taylor Pruitt (Wichita, Kan.)
