OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College volleyball team opened its 2008 season last weekend by hosting the Kickoff Challenge. It was truly a challenge with a field consisting of five ranked teams, including the No. 6 ranked Cavaliers. The other ranked teams were No. 2 Cowley College, No. Des Moines Area Community College, No. 5 Parkland College and No. 25 Longview Community College. When the dust settled, JCCC and Parkland came out on top, each posting 3-1 records. Longview finished 2-2, and the second-ranked Tigers of Cowley and Des Moines Area finished 1-3 in the challenge.

JCCC began the challenge with a 3-1 win over Longview. The Cavaliers won the first two games 26-24 and 25-18. The Lakers forced an extra game with a 26-16 victory, but JCCC closed out the match 25-12. JCCC followed by knocking off conference rival Cowley 3-1. The Cavaliers opened with a 25-16, then the Tigers tied it up wit a 25-22 win. JCCC then took control, winning the next two 25-22 and 25-20.

JCCC may have still been thinking about their victory over the second ranked Tigers when the began play Saturday morning. JCCC stumbled to a 3-1 loss to Des Moines Area, falling 20-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 21-25. It was the only win for the Bears. However, the Cavaliers redeemed themselves with an impressive 3-0 win over No. 5 Parkland, winning 25-11, 25-14 and 25-11.

Several players had solid efforts in the event. Returning All-American Sydney Pemberton led the squad with 56 kills, and finished with an attack percentage of .472.
