Twelve athletes post national qualifying marks at Cavalier Cup
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Twelve Johnson County Community College track and field posted national qualifying marks at the Cavalier Cup, the first track and field meet of the 2006 indoor season. In addition, both the women’s and men’s team won the team competition with Highland and Coffeyville.
On the women’s side, Atilvia Spencer qualified in two events, winning the 600-meters with a time of 1:44.21 and the women’s triple jump with a mark of 35'8.75". Joining her as a qualifier in the 600-meters is Niki Wright, who placed second with a time of 1:45.13.
Esther Mathias and Jackie Jamison, members of the 2005 national champion 1/2 marathon team, each posted NQM’s in the 1,000-meters. Mathias won the event with a time of 3:07.43. Jamison placed second with a time of 3:11.91.
JCCC also had two qualifiers in the pole vault. Leading the way was 2005 NJCAA indoor national champion Erica Culver, who cleared 10'11.75". Erica Mings also qualified for nationals with a mark of 9'6.25".
Rounding out JCCC’s female qualifiers is Lexi Meinke, a four-time all-conference thrower last year. Meinke won the weight throw with a mark of 44'11.50", a personal-best effort.
On the men’s side, JCCC had double qualifiers in the pole vault and long jump. In the vault, Adam Ergenbright, an All-American last year, won the event with a personal-best mark of 16'4.75". Placing second with the same mark was Kyle Dennis, the 2005 indoor and outdoor national champion.
Tony Ledbetter and Dustin Turner finished 1-2 in the long jump. Ledbetter recorded a winning leap of 23'2.75", while Turner was a close second with a mark of 23'2.25".
Rounding out the national qualifiers for the JCCC men is thrower Willy Cochran, a two-time outdoor All-American as a freshman. Cochran won the weight throw with a mark of 47'10.5".
