Mathias breaks 1,000-meter record

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  Esther Mathias, a sophomore member of the Johnson County Community College women’s track team, broke the school record in the 1,000-meters while competing at the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa over the weekend.  Mathias recorded a time of 3:00.69, breaking her old mark by six seconds.  She set the school record last year on the same track.  Her effort earned her a second-place finish in the event.  Diane Nukri of Butler County was the winner with a time of 2:59.52.

Mathias began the 2006 season with a win in the 1,000 at the Cavaliers Cup, finishing in 3:07.43.  She followed the next week at the Adidas/Nebraska Invitational by posting a national qualifying mark in the 800-meters.

Mathias has earned five All-America honors in her career at JCCC.  Last indoor season, she ran legs on the national champion 4x800 relay and runner-up distance medley relay.  She also placed fifth nationally in the 1,000-meters.
