JCCC Runner-up at Region VI Indoor Track

Joe Weis, Track Coach OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men’s track and field team posted a runner-up finish at the 2006 NJCAA Region VI Indoor Championships in Manhattan, Kan. last weekend.  The second-place finish is the highest since 2000, and best under head coach Joe Weis.   A total of 17 athletes garnered 26 All-Region honors.  In addition, Weis was named the 2006 NJCAA Region VI Indoor Coach of the Year, and sophomore pole vaulter Kyle Dennis was named Athlete of the Meet.  The team also won the East Jayhawk Conference title.  JCCC athletes won 12 events in the conference standings.

Kyle Dennis Dennis won the pole vault with a mark of 17'2.75".  That effort set JCCC, region and conference records.  He was the indoor and outdoor national champion as a freshman, and he heads into this year’s national indoor championships as the favorite to win again.

Ergenbright, a two-time All-American in the vault last year as well, placed second to Dennis in the event this season.  Ergenbright too is expected to contend for All-America accolades at this year’s championship.

Freshman Gerron Herring posted region wins in the 200-meter dash and long jump.  His time in the 200-meters was 21.89, and his mark in the long jump was 23'8.25".  Both efforts also won him conference titles, and set new conference meet records.  Herring also placed third in the region and first in the conference in the 60-meters.

Freshman Sam Stubbs won region and conference titles in the 400-meters, posting a winning time of 48.91.  He also ran a leg on the record setting conference champion 4x400 relay at finished in 3:19.29.  They also placed second in the region.  Joining him on that relay were Nathaniel Williams, Rufus Triggs and Josh Robinson.

Triggs also placed second in the region, and first in the conference in the 600-meters, and ran a leg on the region and conference champion 4x800 relay.   Joining him on the relay were Tighe VanAnne, Justin Simonich, and Alan Kroll.  

Other All-Region VI efforts were turned in by Tyler Antwine (60-meter hurdles-4th), Brian Fesler (pentathlon-6th), Idiato Jeremiah (long jump-6th), Corey Jones (shot put-5th), Kroll (1,000-meters-4th), Nigel Morris (60-meter hurdles-3rd), Ryan Patrick (mile-6th), Robinson (400-meters-5th), Dustin Turner (long jump-4th), VanAnne (1,000-meters-6th), and Williams (600-meters-5th).
